The square root of “magic” plus “love” multiplied by “art squared” is an amusing equation that allows one to contemplate artworks that conjure the unknown. Traditionally magic was, in essence, a transformation — taking something less valuable and making it remarkable. The works in this group exhibition are infused with a cathartic spirit and vision of the universe that is expansive, always in motion and open to mystery. The message embedded in the tongue-in-cheek formula, that is the exhibition’s title, suggests that the artist’s role is to find inspiration in the unusual and to create enigmatic and thought provoking works. Artists are everyday shamans, their strategy and artistic process is to construct riddles out of the world.

“ ... all that we say we are saying around that which cannot be said, cannot be spoken.”
— Susan Griffin
Magic Beans is pleased to announce Lorella Paleni’s first solo exhibition with the gallery.
“OTHƎRWISƎ” is a cohesive body of new paintings investigating animal and human relationships. With colorful and contrasting hues, the paintings are built on layers and transparencies. The light that inhabits the
works are often warm flickering fires, like Will-o’-the-Wisp’s spontaneous combustions. The animal and human body’s gestures mingle with the fire, trees, and other forms populating the space.
The subject of the animal also doubles as the "Other,” uncomfortable and unfamiliar. Paleni’s work investigates the fallacy of the thin line that man draws to separate herself from the otherness of the animal. Her paintings create a language beyond verbal systems, establishing a space where speech eludes and rational thinking fails. The “Other” can emerge as the possibility of something unplanned, unexpected, a mishap.
