A----Dance is an ink animation made inside a found object: a Tuk-Tuki office attendance book from a Kolkata street market, its pages organised as a bureaucratic grid, names in columns, days across the top, to register the daily presence and absence of workers. I drew directly into it, tracing across its pages the silhouette of a light tower outside Kolkata's main railway station, and the birds that lived on and around it: landing, dispersing, wheeling, returning. Each page became a frame; the book became the support for a choreography it was never designed to hold. The title came from the cover. The printed words Office Attendance Book contained, waiting, the word Dance, I erased four letters and left the dash in their place. That small gap holds the whole question the piece asks: whose time counts as real, who gets to be registered, and who moves through the world leaving no trace in any record. The birds and the workers shared the same tower, the same city, the same pages; but at different temporal and perceptual scales, only one of them legible to the institution.
